MYOJO : Keito’s 10000 letters long interview
The world I got involved with a thought to be close to my father was a place to be known how my father is great.
—-Then, I wanna ask about your childhood. What is your the oldest memory?
The fact that members adjust to my level was shocked to me and their kindness was tighten my heart.
I’m going to pursue my fathers back forever with my company like a family.
—-I have an image that you won’t tell about yourself so much.
"I’m a type of person that don’t like to talk about myself. However I think this interview is a good chance"
"My oldest memory. I don’t remember exactly but I heard I had been to Hawaii with my family when I was 2 or 3 years old. I have a only memory that I dived into a pool and it must be the oldest memory in my life."
—-Dived in such young age?
"The picture is still in my house. Do you know an album jacket of "Nevermind" from Nirvana?"
—-Is it a baby swimming, isn’t it?
"Yes it is. I’ve listening their music in these four or five years and I asked to my father that the picture is similar with the jacket photo. He said he took the picture to make it similar."
—-Oh, I get it.
"He tried several times to take the picture so when I think why I have the memory, this is because I was so surprised(laughs)"
—-hahaha! What kind of boy you were when you were an elementary school student?
"Actually I don’t remember vividly. Well… I hadn’t like stay in a house so went out to play or did active things… maybe I was a bright person"
—-like a boss of a gang?
"wait! I remembered. I was not bright person at all.(laughs) My birthday is April 1st and I was the youngest in my class so always my height was the lowest all the time. My record in the school was normal and my sports level also normal so I wasn’t stand out at all. If anything a quite person. I hadn’t talk to someone on my own accord. Also I hadn’t got fight."
—-You are?
"Like a PEACE person. I really love my mother so it might be related that she brought me up with a word "Do not do things which you feel don’t like to be done by someone" all the time."
—-You weren’t a boy who stand out.
"But I stood out with my appearance.(laughs) I had very long hair when I was an elementary school student. It was full under my chest."
—-Really?
"It was my father’s taste. Usually boys such age don’t like to do different things from others but I couldn’t had hair cut. I remember I cried a lot telling my mother "I wanna have hair cut!" and finally I could make it!! For now, the hairstyle was cool but I didnt like it at that time."
—-When did you recognized that your father is the artist?
"I have no idea but it was normal for me he is popular. However I felt more strongly that he is the artist when I started my life in this world."
—-How come you went to UK when you were 4th grade in elementary school?
"It was also decided by my parents. I was not such a cool 9 years old who can say "I wanna go to UK!!(laughs) "
—-What was the reason for that?
"I asked to my father afterwards. He said if students wanna enter a good university in Japan, they have to go calm school from when they are elementary school students and also they can back to their home around 10pm everyday. It’s is normal we see children walk to their home at night with their randsel(backpack) but he doesn’t like it so he decided make me go to UK."
—-It’s like one of educational policy.
"Yes. I had been to a summer school in UK for a month beforehand and came back to Japan. I got a private English teacher for a month in Japan. But It’s impossible become able to speak English in such short term because I hadn’t known Alphabet at that time."
—-You are right.
"Then I was took to airport in September suddenly. When I turned back at a departure gate, my father waved his hands to me with his smile but my mother cried a lot. I took a plane with thinking "Why my mom is crying?" At the airport in UK also I thought "Where is here?" I found a man who having a paper was written "OKAMOTO KEITO".
—-You’ve been to by yourself.
"They should have come with me. Because I was only 9 years old.(laughs)
—-You experienced a big thing
"I also think I experienced huge things. It will sound wired but I hardly remember about that. I cannot image how I survived because no one don’t speak Japanese."
—-Hahaha
"With not knowing anything, I was took to a school. I was 4th grade but really my English was poor so I was in a 2nd grade. Next year and year after year, I skipped grade and studied in my real grade. "
—-Had you become homesick?
"It seems I cried in the first day but when my father called me one week later, I got used according he.(laughs) I haven’t remember but he heard my friends voice as back sounds."
—-Great!
"How can I say… It was not difficulties. I enjoyed a lot with kind friends"
—-You lived home stay at first, right?
"Sure. And the family was from Russia. Everyone speaks Russian so I was like "Wait!! Why I’m in Russian family? Even though I cannot speak English !" On the other hand, I have happiness memories with them. I moved to dormitory next year. "
—-How was your Dormitory life goes?
"My room mates were 7 students and the room was large. Basically students in UK goes same school from kinder garden to high school. I thought I’ll go same junior high school but suddenly my school went bankrupt so I changed.
—-Stormy and full of drama.
"Exactly.(laughs) The next school was so big that have 10 tennis court in or 2 field for rugby. Some students come to school by horse"
—-Horse??!
"Cannot believe from Japan, right?"
—-Have you experienced anything else which impossible in japan?
"We have to choose from army, navy or air force as an extracurricular lesson. Navy try to go down a river with kayak and Air force try to control helicopter. I chose army so walked 45km within 3 days with bringing tents, foods and guns."
—-What is that?
"We just go forward in a trackless path pushing plants away. Suddenly we got order like "the enemy is coming! Crawling alongs!" Some students give up so it’s very hard. We build tent and cook dinner by ourselves at night."
—-Had you thought “Why I’m in UK?”
"Never. Seriously it’s thankful to my father. It’s was really great experiences. I could learn English and gain confident I can live alone."
—-How often had you came back to Japan while you were in UK?
"Every summer and winter vacation"
—-Had you get any informations about this world(芸能界)?
"Not at all"
—-They why had you though to enter Johnny’s?
"I’ve seen my fathers stage and visited live houses. When I came back to Japan in vacation, probably it was 2006, he recommended to go different stage from my father’s. It was "Takizawa Kakumei" and Ive known Takki and I liked him."
—-How did you feel after the stage?
"How can I say, it was amazing. Also I saw many Johnny’s Jr. Probably Yabu-kun and Hikaru-kun were on the stage. Boys who same ages looks very shiny with their sing and dance. I’d hardly known about Jr but I regretted a lot.
—-Regret
"Yeah. I’ve seen my father’s works since I was a kid and imagined "I wanna be like him someday"
—-I see
"To tell you the truth, I wanted to enter the world but I couldn’t to say that. My father said "Why don’t you practice guitar?" but I answered "I don’t" because of I was shy even thought I have interest. I can say same thing about Johnny’s. However I couldn’t say "I wanna do it" and I was in the UK.
—-You couldnt tell a lie to yourself any more when you saw boys same generation were on the stage
"Yes. Than’s why I regretted that why I haven’t tell earlier. When the show was finished I said to my father that "I wanna do it" for the first time.
—-What did your father say?
"He said "I’m gonna ask to Johnny-san" and I entered to Johnny’s.
—-Then your activity as a Johnny’s Jr was started.
"The day before the "Johnny’s Jr no Diabouken", I met Johnny-san for the first time. Suddenly he said "You! Appear on the stage tomorrow!" I couldn’t understand but I was on the show next day and introduced about myself in English in front of many fandom."
—-Was it so suddenly?
"Yes. Yuto introduced me in a MC corner and I appeared on stage speaking English. Then started next song but I couldn’t dance so just disappeared from stage in haste. Not only audience but also Jr wondered who is he. It was my first stage."
—-Were you nervous?
"Yes. However I felt I’m happy with this work when I saw fandoms happiness faces from stage. Moreover, I thought I should have enter more beforehand."
—-At first, your activities were only in your vacations, right?
"Exactly. After the concert I went back to UK and went to school as usual. Next was in a winter vacation and I met Chinen for the first time. It was Jr’s Concert in Yoyogi. I was appeared in a MC corner and back to my seat and back to the UK.
—-You debuted as a member of Hey! Say! JUMP right after that.
"Yes. Johnny-san said to me "I’m going to make Hey! Say! JUMP to add some members like Yabu-kun and Hikaru-kun into Hey! Say! 7. I’m thinking add you too but if you will go back to the UK, I’m going to add different person.""
—-What was your answer?
"I seriously thought about it deeply. I cannot sing and dance at all. Also I cannot speak Japanese well because I’ve been in the UK for 5 years. So I considered a lot whether it is right to answer "I’m gonna do" like such person. There are a vast number of person who experienced many things as a Jr. Is it okay I combine a group and debut earlier than them?"
—-You considered a lot.
"But if I leave the chance now, never I can get such wonderful chance. If I turn it down, I must regret. I regretted the late become Jr so I don’t wanna regret anymore. I had a dream and eager to close to my father. Also I hoped to show me who I’m trying to my mother who lives separate. I thought why Johnny-san chose me is because he could see something in me. That’s why I answered "I wanna do it". It was not easy decision but told him "I wanna try it"
—-Then you become a member of JUMP
"This was just the beginning…
—-You have only little experience as Johnny’s Jr so needed make effort and felt difficulties?
"I couldn’t do anything at all. Not only dance or singing but also talking in Japanese. As a matter of course if I excuse that I lived in the UK, it’s become "So what?" Cannot speak Japanese was just negative so I started studying Japanese again.
—-Had you counted somebody?
"No one. All of my friends live in the UK. I’m a lonely child. My mother was so kind when I was child so my personality also like I don’t wanna make somebody worry and I couldn’t talk about this situation to parents.
—-It was so hard.
"However my feeling was not how much its hard but sorry to members."
—-Why?
"Because I was trouble for members. Bothered them a lot. When we practiced the dance of Ultra Music Power, obviously only me cannot dance compare with other members. I was realized at that time."
—-To what?
"Everyone adjusted to my level. Probably the dance was more difficult and cool but because of me they cannot dance the original one. I cannot fit to their level so they make their dance to lower level. I recognized soon started the first lesson. That’s why I cried in the lesson with thought that I made a big mistake.
—-You thought a such thing.
"When I decided to be a member of JUMP, it was my dream but my dream sacrificed JUMP members. I regretted my decision at that day. Probably members could have more fun if I haven’t say "Yes". If it is not me, JUMP would be different with better person…."
—-You regretted.
"It is not game. We stand in front of fandom. If I were JUMP fandom, I would think "Why he is in JUMP?". Absolutely they gonna think however they are kind. But member asked me who such person that "What happened? Are you okay?". Of course I couldn’t say like "Sorry because of me" so I said "I have headache".
—-Member was kind.
"Member…. I’m gonna burst into crying to remember that…"
—-Take your time.
"Everyone was so kind. They could abandon me but they didn’t do that. Yuto taught me dance with talking kindly. Chinen hanged out me as a private often. Yamachan gave me advises that "It’s better to move like this." or "With this move, you looks more cool". …..also, Yabu-kun and Hikaru-kun also pointed out my wrong and sometimes scolded me in earnest from their kindness. I’ve helped from member all the time…
—-They supported you.
"Sure, everyone supported me. It was very grateful but this kindness was hurtful for me. I thought please don’t do that…."
—-I know your feeling.
"I’ve known my existence is minus to JUMP. It’s normal fandom also think like "Why is he in JUMP?". Also some Johnny’s junior were dissatisfied with me. I heard like that things some times. However member was so kind. I think this is because I could make effort. The biggest reason was I didn’t wanna drag everyone else down. I did my best with just a wish not to bother JUMP and be a plus element of JUMP someday. I had practiced dance alone all the time. This is the reason I can do my best now, too.
—-Takaki-kun told me “Keito’s English is really helpful in overseas”
"I don’t know but I’m very glad when I said like that. I can think I also can support a little bit someone."
—-You also become plus to JUMP band
"Why I started play the guitar was because I saw Yuto trying to drum in our first concert. I wished having some strong point or become plus element to JUMP or wanted perform in a concert. Yuto played drum so I will play the guitar, I thought. I was too shy but I have the best teacher. I could say to my father "Can you tell me the guitar?" for the first time.
—-Starting guitar was for the group.
"Probably I had an idea that I can live by myself. I’ve lived in difficult daily alone. It was the first time that I cannot do anything by myself. I can be here now because I have these members"
—-Was it hard to go work place?
"I’ve loved my work. Everything I’ve loved. Everything was appreciated. But the most important thing was Members was always there."
—-You are so lucky with your members.
"I don’t have any friend from elementary school because I had been to the UK. If I have sibling, it would be a little bit different. I came back to Japan suddenly and met with JUMP members and stay with this member for 7 years. It was gradually but I’ve gained relationship and made my place. AWAY changed to my HOME. I’ve been taught what livening with people it is by members.
—-Probably it was a destiny to meet them.
"Until met with JUMP, I’d never told about my heart deeply and I hadn’t had such deep friend. JUMP members were first person who can expose myself. Members are more than friend. …..well similar with FAMILY."
—-Do you have any cherish memory with members?
"I have a lot but the most vividly memory was with Daichan…. I had some worries and talked about that to Daichan on the wire. While I’m talking, I started cry. To be surprise, Daichan also cried over the phone. I’ve never met such person so I could felt what is NAKAMA at that time.
—-Have you thought to quit?
"Many times. Sometimes I’m seriously worrying that "Do I really need to JUMP?" If I’m the burden for JUMP, it’s will be better without me. I thought many times that really can I stay here? Do they not need me? However if I quite, I’m gonna regret.
—-Had you have any support except for JUMP?
"Fandom was soooo big to me. I become worry when I taking interview for magazine or shooting TV program like are there anybody who seeing me? because we can meet fandom only few times."
—-Yes.
"So I really like concerts which we can meet with them face-to-face. Everyone is smile or having fun. They give me a huge power. At that time, I feel it’s is very fun. Not forget everything but I can take away my worries at that moment. The moment which I can recognize "my decision was correct" is concert which can meet fandom.
—-Fandom’s smile supported you.
"I can feel I can stay in JUMP. When we did Johnny’s World, I had a chance to talk with some fandom and they talked me friendly like "the scene was really nice. but you fell over a little bit." or "You changed your hair style between one-act and two-act". They looked me until tiny points. I thought my decision and my effort was not wrong at that time.
—-You told me “I felt my father is an artist more before enter Johnny’s”right?
"To tell you the truth his existence is pressure. He was popular when he was same age with me and appeared a lot of TV dramas. Sometimes I think what am I doing?. I know people surround me think it’s impossible to over my father even thought I do my best, but I’m in same world with he now and want to be more popular than him. I’m believing someday I can dream come true. "
—-Are you sure to believe it?
"Yes. I don’t wanna make my feeling to words but I wanna be a top in this world. That’s why I’d like to challenge whatever now."
—-Anything?
"Especially I wanna be an actor so "Kinpachi Sensei" was really grateful. But when I watched the on-air, it was awful. I realized lack of my ability. If I can get another chance I want to be grow up until it. Now I’m studying play act watching shows or movies. My father’s act is amazing but I don’t wanna lose him.
—-You love acting.
"Basically I don’t have confident to me so it may be fell fun to be different person not myself."
—-Your father is your idol?
"Yes because he is just amazing"
—-You love your father so much. You also faced to difficulties because of your background. Have you ever blamed your father?
"It’s sounds not good but if he is not my father, I’m not here now. I’m just appreciate to him."
—-Before having talk, I thought you were an elite because your father is popular and terms you stayed in Jr was so short.
"Usually I cannot say such things easily.(laughs)"
—-Your father and mother feeling happy with your work, don’t they?
"I have no idea, actually. I haven’t talk such deep thing because feel shy. I’ve never ask this question but they might be feeling happy to see I’m doing happily."
—-How was their reaction when you passed university exam?
"I haven’t talk about that, neither."
—-You are really shy person.
"Especially toward very close person. I’m bothersome person. I cannot tell my heart well use my words but hoping my cherish person will be happy. To my cherish person, I can pull behind myself. It’s also happy to me. yes. un.
—-How was today talked such a lot?
"I really don’t like have such talk. But maybe someone would like to know so it was a good chance. I thought its okay but I cried. Really I’ve never talked such things ever. If I talk, it will just wired mood, right?(laughs)
—-Your father will praise how you made effort until now, won’t he?
"I’m not sure but I’d like to be praised with my acting someday."
—-Do you ask to your father give any advises to live in this world?
"Not at all. However he always says to me that "今じゃなくていい"
—-What does it means?
"I think I don’t have to be persist in NOW to be shine and popular. He says its okay after 5 years or 10 years."
—-Probably he understands you a lot.
"I don’t know but alway keeping his word to my mind. Toward someday when I get spot light, I’m doing my best, now.
